Oregon’s Cottage Grove Sentinel will publish its final issue on Wednesday, Oct. 28.
Parent company Country Media says its board voted earlier this year to discontinue the paper after two years of sharply declining advertising revenue, CEO Joe Warren told KEZI.
Cindy Weeldreyer, who has reported in South Lane County since 1990, blames an ownership carousel, telling the station she has lost count of how many media companies bought and sold the Sentinel during her time there. The closure follows the shutdown of the Chronicle, another South Lane paper, in August.
Weeldreyer hopes to launch a successor publication in the first quarter of 2027, depending on the transition team she is recruiting. She is floating the name Bohemian Nugget, after one of the area’s earliest papers, and plans to bring back a weekly community e-newsletter, Around the Grove, on Nov. 2.
