The political makeup of America’s podcast audience is increasingly looking like the nation as a whole, a significant change from just four years ago when Democrats held a commanding advantage among podcast listeners. New research from Signal Hill Insights shows that as podcasting has grown into a mainstream medium, its audience has become more politically diverse, with Independents now accounting for the largest share of monthly consumers.
According to the latest Demos+ research conducted by Signal Hill Insights and Triton Digital, 39% of monthly podcast consumers identified as Independent during the third quarter of 2026 vs. 33% who identified as Democrat and 29% as Republican. That is a change from the 2022 midterm election year, when Democrats accounted for 39% of monthly podcast consumers vs. just 26% for Republicans and 35% for Independents.
But perhaps the most striking finding is the growing number of listeners who don’t lean toward either major party. Signal Hill reports that 20% of monthly podcast consumers are Independents with no party preference, nearly double the 11% share among U.S. adults overall. That could have implications for political advertising and candidate outreach as the midterm elections approach.
